Shipowners, port authorities, and freight operators turn to internationally binding standards from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) when procuring and inspecting lashing materials. These standards govern permissible materials for ropes, chains, and straps; define construction and testing requirements; and set minimum breaking strengths. The IMO's CSS Code (Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing) is the central reference for lashing equipment aboard seagoing vessels, while ISO 1161 covers the corner fittings of shipping containers to which lashing gear is typically attached. Compliance is both a safety obligation and a legal one: following cargo damage, insurers and courts will examine whether certified, standards-compliant equipment was in use.
