Whenever a partial load is being quoted in road freight, a key question arises: how much floor space will it occupy? The loading meter (LM) provides a standardized answer, measuring the linear use of a truck's loading area at a standard width of 2.40 metres. The value for any given footprint is calculated as: length × width ÷ 2.40. Freight forwarders apply loading meters to price less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments fairly and to quickly assess whether cargo from different shippers can share the same vehicle. Unlike cubic volume, which factors in height, the loading meter captures floor space only – making it the more practical unit in day-to-day dispatching.
