Freight forwarders and shippers moving goods between the United States and Mexico relied on Kansas City Southern (KCS) as one of the few Class I railroads with a direct cross-border route structure. The network spanned approximately 8,400 km through the central and southern United States into Mexico, serving daily traffic in automotive, chemicals, agricultural commodities, and intermodal container segments. Following its merger with Canadian Pacific, KCS became Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) in 2023 – forming the first single-line rail connection from Canada through the US to Mexico. The Mexican portion of the network, previously operated as Kansas City Southern de México (KCSM), is now also part of CPKC. In industry practice, the KCS name continues to appear as a historical reference in North American corridor discussions and legacy contract documentation.
