By tightly coupling procurement, transport, and production scheduling, manufacturers free up working capital and cut warehousing costs. The trade-off is acute vulnerability to supply chain disruption: a delayed truck or a supplier failure can halt an entire line within hours when no buffer stock exists. Originating in the Toyota Production System, JIT manufacturing is a cornerstone of lean thinking. It differs from just-in-sequence supply, where parts must arrive not only on time but also in the exact order of assembly.
