Just-in-Time (JIT) eliminates excess inventory by synchronising the delivery of materials, components, or finished goods precisely with the moment they are consumed in production or sales. Originating in the Toyota Production System, the concept has spread across manufacturing and retail worldwide. Companies trade warehousing costs and idle capital for tighter supplier contracts and higher delivery frequency – a shift that demands accurate demand forecasting and disciplined transport scheduling. Freight forwarders operating under JIT agreements work with narrower time windows and more frequent runs than in conventional bulk logistics. JIT is distinct from Just-in-Sequence (JIS), which adds a further constraint: parts must arrive not only on time but in the exact order the production line requires.
