A freight forwarder routing goods by rail from Rotterdam to Budapest will move the shipment through a Rail Freight Corridor (RFC) – a cross-border rail network established under EU Regulation 913/2010 to improve the speed and interoperability of international rail freight. Infrastructure managers along each corridor are obliged to offer pre-bookable train path capacity and to apply harmonised technical standards across national borders. Nine such corridors currently connect Europe's major economic centres, linking seaports and inland terminals with industrial hubs. The RFC framework is designed to cut transit times, reduce administrative friction between national rail networks, and support a modal shift from road to rail. RFCs should not be confused with the broader TEN-T network, which covers all transport modes; they represent its operationally managed, rail-specific layer.
