Partial loads are sorted and assembled at a consolidation hub into one transport unit, typically a container or vehicle, bound for a shared destination region. Full utilisation of the container or vehicle capacity substantially reduces the freight cost per unit. A freight forwarder or third-party logistics provider acts as the consolidator: coordinating collections, managing documentation for each individual shipper, and ensuring the combined shipment is correctly declared for customs. The model is particularly widespread in LCL (Less than Container Load) ocean freight and international general cargo services.
