Freight forwarders and terminal operators use JIT cross-docking to transfer inbound shipments directly onto outbound transport without any intermediate storage, timed precisely to the consignee's production or delivery schedule. Goods are unloaded at the transfer point, sorted by destination, and immediately loaded onto outgoing vehicles—never placed in a storage rack. The method significantly reduces inventory costs and warehouse footprint while shortening supply chain lead times. It requires stable, predictable freight flows, however: unexpected volume fluctuations or transport delays are difficult to absorb without a storage buffer. Unlike standard cross-docking, the defining characteristic of JIT cross-docking is its tight synchronisation with the recipient's operational rhythm.
