Unlike the European EUR-pallet (1200 × 800 mm), Japan's industrial standard JIS defines two distinct pallet formats: 1100 × 1100 mm and 1100 × 1300 mm. The Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC) sets binding requirements for load capacity, timber grade, and fastening methods. Exporters shipping to Japan must verify pallet compatibility early in the logistics chain, as standard European or North American pallets frequently cannot be accommodated by Japanese racking systems, conveyors, or container configurations. Re-palletizing at the port of entry adds both cost and delay. Regular exporters to Japan therefore either ship on JIS-compliant pallets from origin or arrange conversion services with the consignee.
