It is not a regulatory authority: its standards become binding only when governments or contracting parties incorporate them into law or contracts. In freight forwarding and customs, ISO 9001 (quality management systems) and ISO 28000 (supply chain security management) are among the most frequently referenced, as clients often make certification a contractual prerequisite. ISO should not be confused with the IEC, which covers electrotechnical standards, or the ITU, responsible for telecommunications.
