ISO 14001 is the ISO standard for environmental management systems (EMS), specifying the requirements an organisation must meet to systematically manage and improve its environmental performance. For transport and logistics operators, this covers vehicle and facility emissions, waste and hazardous materials handling, fuel and resource consumption, and compliance with applicable environmental law. Certification is voluntary but frequently required by major shippers and industrial clients as a condition of vendor approval, particularly in sustainability-focused supply chains. ISO 14001 should not be confused with ISO 9001, which governs quality management: the two standards are structurally compatible but address distinct aspects of operational performance. The current version dates from 2015.
