Unlike simple warehouse rent, inventory holding costs capture every direct and indirect expense that arises from keeping goods in stock. The main components are capital carrying costs (the opportunity cost of money tied up in inventory), facility costs (rent or depreciation), labour for storage and administration, utilities, insurance, and losses from shrinkage, spoilage, or obsolescence. For freight forwarders and 3PL providers, accurate tracking of each element is essential to price warehousing services at a sustainable margin. Not to be confused with the warehousing fees charged to customers, which represent the revenue-side counterpart to these costs.
