At year-end, companies subject to accounting obligations must carry out an inventory: a physical count – by number, measurement, or weight – of all assets, followed by their valuation. The scope covers raw materials, consumables, semi-finished and finished goods. In freight forwarding and warehousing, the process serves a dual purpose: it satisfies statutory reporting requirements and acts as an internal control against stock discrepancies, shrinkage, and unrecorded withdrawals. Three main approaches exist: the cut-off inventory (all items counted on a single reference date), perpetual inventory (every goods movement recorded in real time), and cycle counting (statistically valid sampling of selected stock lines). In large distribution centres, a full physical count may take several days and requires careful reconciliation between the accounting system and the warehouse management system (WMS).
