# International transport law

International transport law is the body of law that governs cross-border carriage of goods and persons through international conventions, national legislation, and contractual frameworks. Each transport mode has its own liability convention: CMR for road freight, the Montreal Convention for air cargo, the Hague Rules or Hamburg Rules for sea freight, and the CIM Uniform Rules for rail. These instruments set out liability caps, time limits for claims, and burden-of-proof rules that differ substantially from one regime to another. For freight forwarders and shippers, correctly identifying the applicable convention is especially critical in multimodal transport: when damage cannot be pinpointed to a specific leg of the journey, the applicable regime determines the extent and enforceability of any claim. Incoterms complement international transport law by defining delivery and risk obligations between buyer and seller, but they do not replace statutory liability rules.
