Prominent examples include the CMR Convention for international road freight, the CIM Uniform Rules for rail, and the Montreal Convention for air cargo; maritime transport is governed in part by the Hague-Visby Rules. For freight forwarders and shippers, these agreements matter most at the claims stage: the liability caps they set are frequently well below actual cargo value, making supplementary cargo insurance a practical necessity rather than an optional extra.
