International transit is a customs procedure allowing goods to pass through one or more countries without payment of import duties or excise taxes along the way. The shipment remains under continuous customs control from origin to final destination; duties become due only when the goods are released into free circulation at the point of arrival. In practice, the procedure relies on recognised instruments: the TIR Carnet facilitates road transport across borders with minimal intermediate formalities, while within the EU and associated countries the Common Transit procedure (NCTS) serves the same purpose. The key operational advantage for freight forwarders is that a single customs guarantee covers the entire journey, eliminating the need for separate clearance at each border.
