The core documents are the commercial invoice stating buyer, seller, quantities, and declared value; the packing list detailing the contents of each package; and the transport document—a bill of lading for ocean freight or an air waybill (AWB) for air cargo. Where preferential tariff treatment is claimed, a certificate of origin or preference declaration must accompany the consignment; depending on the commodity, additional permits, test certificates, or dangerous goods documentation may also be required. Freight forwarders audit the full document set for internal consistency, since even minor discrepancies between the invoice value and the customs declaration can trigger holds, penalty duties, or seizure of goods. Unlike the transport contract alone, shipping documentation spans customs compliance, origin proof, and product conformity.
