Shippers and freight forwarders take out such policies because carrier liability under a bill of lading is capped at statutory limits that rarely reflect the true cargo value. Coverage is structured globally around the Institute Cargo Clauses (ICC), available in variants A, B, and C: Clause A provides the broadest all-risks cover, while B and C protect against named perils only. Marine cargo insurance should not be confused with P&I insurance, which covers the shipowner's third-party liability rather than the cargo itself.
