The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the global trade association for the shipping industry, representing national shipowner associations whose combined fleets account for the large majority of the world's commercial merchant tonnage. Its primary function is to coordinate the industry's positions in negotiations with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), national governments, and other regulatory bodies. Holding consultative status at the IMO, the ICS actively contributes to the development of rules on maritime safety, environmental standards, and seafarers' working conditions. Its technical guidance documents are widely regarded as authoritative references across the sector – covering topics from emission reduction targets to alternative fuels. Not to be confused with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), which governs trade finance instruments and Incoterms.
