As soon as a vessel berths or containers need to be reshuffled, internal container transfer (ICT) comes into play. ICT refers to the controlled movement of boxes within a terminal—from berth to storage yard, between stacking rows, or from the yard block to the truck gate. Operations are carried out by yard tractors, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), or gantry cranes. How efficiently these moves are executed directly affects vessel dwell times and overall terminal throughput: poor ICT planning leads to congestion, extended ship turnaround, and higher handling costs. ICT should not be confused with loading and discharging operations, which govern the physical handover between vessel and quay.
