Intermodal transport moves goods in a single standardized loading unit – typically an ISO container or swap body – across two or more modes without repacking the cargo at each handover point. Road, rail, inland waterway, and deep-sea shipping each handle the leg where they offer the best cost or carbon profile; the forwarder manages the overall routing under one contract or multimodal bill of lading. Because the cargo itself is never touched between origin and destination, handling costs fall and damage risk is substantially lower than in break-bulk operations. The system depends on standardized equipment dimensions and efficient interchange terminals. It differs from multimodal transport as a general concept: intermodal specifically requires that one intact loading unit travels throughout, whereas multimodal simply means more than one mode is used.
