A container leaves an Eastern European factory by truck, transfers to rail at the nearest intermodal terminal, crosses several countries by train, and shifts to an inland barge on the Rhine – all along pre-defined route networks. Intermodal freight corridors are designated transport axes that systematically link road, rail, inland waterways, and seaports. They give freight forwarders and shippers stable, predictable connections and significantly cut the planning effort required for each individual shipment. Well-known examples include the EU's Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) core network corridors. The benefits are shorter transit times, lower overall costs, and reduced carbon emissions compared with all-road transport – provided the transhipment terminals at key nodes operate at adequate capacity.
