TARIC—the Integrated Tariff of the European Union—comes into play at every customs clearance of goods crossing the EU's external border. It consolidates applicable duty rates, import levies, tariff quotas, and trade policy measures such as anti-dumping duties and preferential arrangements into a single, EU-wide database. Customs brokers and freight forwarders assign each commodity a ten-digit TARIC code to retrieve the relevant measures automatically. The system extends the international Harmonized System (HS) and the EU's Combined Nomenclature (CN) with EU-specific subheadings. Misclassification can lead to delayed clearance, additional duty assessments, and penalties. TARIC should not be confused with the national supplementary tariff codes that individual member states may apply for domestic statistical or fiscal purposes.
