Determining the cargo insurance rate gives shippers and freight forwarders the premium basis they need before booking cover. Underwriters assess the declared cargo value, mode of transport, routing and transshipment points, commodity classification, and the requested scope of cover – ranging from all-risk clauses to named-perils policies. The resulting rate is expressed as a per-mille or percentage of the insured value. Fragile, high-value, or theft-prone goods attract higher rates, as do shipments moving through regions with elevated risk profiles. The rate should not be confused with the final premium: minimum charges, surcharges, and broker fees may all affect the amount ultimately invoiced.
