An insulated container is a freight container whose walls, floor, and ceiling incorporate a thermal insulation layer, with no active refrigeration unit or power connection. Temperature protection is entirely passive: the insulation holds interior conditions stable as long as transit times and ambient temperatures remain within acceptable limits. Typical applications include wine, seasonal foodstuffs, and certain chemicals that need shielding from temperature extremes but do not require a precisely controlled range. Because no electrical hook-up is needed at the terminal or on board, operating costs are lower than for a refrigerated container (reefer). For pharmaceutical goods subject to strict GDP guidelines, a purely insulated unit is generally not sufficient.
