Large shippers, freight forwarders, and carriers negotiate blanket sums insured, premium rates, and deductibles tailored to their specific risk profile and trade lanes. Two principal coverage structures are available: all-risk, which responds to all fortuitous losses not expressly excluded, and named-peril, which covers only events explicitly listed in the policy – commonly fire, theft, and breakage. The policy generally applies across product categories and modes of transport as specified in the contract. It should not be confused with freight forwarder's liability insurance, which covers third-party claims against the forwarder rather than the intrinsic value of the goods.
