It must be leak-proof, resistant to breakage, and chemically compatible with its contents. The principal regulatory frameworks – ADR (road), IMDG (sea), and IATA-DGR (air) – specify permitted materials, closure requirements, and mandatory performance tests according to hazard class and packing group (I, II, or III). Carriers and freight forwarders verify inner packaging compliance before accepting a dangerous goods shipment; non-conforming units are refused. Not to be confused with the overpack, which consolidates several inner packagings without itself serving as a primary receptacle.
