Inland ports enter the transport chain at the intersection of navigable waterways and land-based infrastructure. Situated on rivers, canals, or lakes accessible only to inland vessels, they handle the transfer of goods between barges, trucks, and rail while providing short-term storage in the pre- or on-carriage leg of a shipment. In Europe, inland ports along the Rhine, Maas, Danube, and northern canal networks relieve pressure on major seaports and frequently offer shippers lower handling costs and faster turnaround times. The CEMT waterway classification determines which vessel sizes and types can call at a given facility. Inland ports should not be confused with dry ports — land-based logistics hubs that perform port-like functions without any direct waterway connection.
