An inland container port enters the transport chain at the point where containers are not cleared and redistributed at the seaport itself but at a terminal further into the hinterland. These facilities – also known as dry ports or inland container depots (ICDs) – sit at rail and road hubs and perform standard port functions: unloading, storage, customs clearance, and cargo consolidation or deconsolidation. For shippers and freight forwarders, they cut the road or rail distance from the seaport significantly, since containers can be collected directly in the hinterland rather than at the quayside. Unlike a river or canal port, an inland container port relies solely on rail and road connections. Major seaports such as Hamburg and Rotterdam operate networks of such terminals to extend their commercial reach inland.
