Motor cargo vessels, push-tow convoys, and barges form the backbone of this mode; a single large push convoy can carry the equivalent of dozens of truckloads at a substantially lower cost per tonne. Common cargo types include grain, coal, minerals, construction materials, and containerised goods. Unlike ocean shipping, inland waterway transport is confined to continental waterway systems and governed by national or regional frameworks – in Europe, the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR) sets key standards.
