The system provides a consistent basis for quotes and invoicing across the industry, preventing each carrier from applying proprietary criteria. In North American LTL (less-than-truckload) transport, the NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) is the dominant standard; other regions operate comparable, sometimes national, frameworks. Freight classes must not be confused with hazardous goods classes under ADR, IMDG, or IATA-DGR, which apply exclusively to dangerous substances and carry separate safety and documentation requirements.
