An individual sanction is a targeted restrictive measure directed at a specific natural person, limiting their financial assets, commercial activities, and in many cases freedom of movement. Typical instruments include asset freezes, transaction prohibitions, and travel bans. Such designations are issued by national authorities, the European Union, or the UN Security Council and published in publicly accessible lists. In freight forwarding, compliance teams must screen consignors, consignees, payers, and beneficial owners against these lists before processing any shipment or payment. Unlike a country embargo, which restricts trade with an entire state, individual sanctions target specific persons regardless of nationality or location.
