The three Group F Incoterms® – FCA (Free Carrier), FAS (Free Alongside Ship), and FOB (Free On Board) – apply when the buyer nominates and arranges the main carriage. The seller delivers to a named handover point in the country of origin, export clearance included, after which transport costs and risk pass to the buyer. The precise handover location sets the three terms apart: FCA at a named place or premises (with loading if collection is at the seller's facility), FAS alongside the vessel at the port of shipment, FOB on board the vessel. FOB remains deeply embedded in commodity trade, but the ICC explicitly recommends FCA for containerised cargo – under FOB, risk can transfer before the goods are actually stowed in the container. Group F is a natural fit for buyers with established carrier agreements or well-connected freight forwarders.
