In-plant cross-docking differs from conventional cross-docking – which transfers goods between separate logistics facilities – in that the entire material flow takes place within a single manufacturing or distribution site. Inbound raw materials, components, or finished goods are unloaded at the receiving dock and routed directly to production lines, assembly stations, or outbound shipping areas, bypassing storage entirely. The approach reduces on-hand inventory, cuts handling steps, and shortens internal lead times. It does, however, demand tight coordination between inbound scheduling, production planning, and dispatch: any timing mismatch risks halting a production line or delaying a shipment. The method is particularly prevalent in automotive and electronics manufacturing, where just-in-time delivery and internal material flow are closely intertwined.
