An import permit is an official authorisation issued by the competent authority – customs, health, veterinary, or a sectoral regulator – required before regulated or quota-controlled goods may cross the border. It names the authorised importer, the commodity, the permitted quantity, and the period of validity. Common requirements arise for foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, dual-use goods, and weapons. Without a valid permit, customs will detain the shipment; processing times vary by authority and product type but can run to several weeks, making early application essential. Not to be confused with the customs import declaration, which is a separate legal instrument filed at the time of clearance.
