An import licence number uniquely identifies a permit issued by customs or a licensing authority authorising the importation of specific goods, and must be declared in the customs entry for the shipment to be released. It enables authorities to track controlled goods across checkpoints and verify compliance with import restrictions, tariff quotas, or trade defence measures such as anti-dumping duties. For sensitive product categories—foodstuffs, chemicals, dual-use goods, or textiles—a missing or invalid licence number is grounds for refusal at the border. The import licence number is distinct from the importer's EORI or tax identification number: it is tied to a specific commodity authorisation, not to the company's general registration.
