The IMDG Code (International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code) is the binding international framework issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) governing the carriage of dangerous goods by sea. It defines how hazardous materials must be classified, packed, marked, labelled, documented, and handled in emergencies aboard vessels engaged in international voyages. Freight forwarders, shipping lines, and terminal operators must comply with the current edition; non-compliance can result in cargo rejection, port state control detention, or substantial fines. Updated on a biennial cycle, the IMDG Code is the maritime counterpart to ADR for road transport and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations for air freight.
