Every freight container receives a globally unique identity through the BIC code (Bureau International des Containers), standardised under ISO 6346. The code combines a four-character owner prefix – three letters for the operator, one letter for equipment category –, a six-digit serial number, and a check digit. Terminals, carriers, and freight forwarders rely on it for container tracking, demurrage and detention billing, and customs declarations. It should not be confused with a booking reference or bill of lading number: the BIC code identifies the physical box, not the cargo movement.
