For bulk shipments of liquids, pastes or granulated materials, the IBC – Intermediate Bulk Container – is the standard packaging solution: a reusable container with a nominal capacity of typically 1,000 litres, mounted on an integrated pallet frame that makes it compatible with forklifts and pallet trucks. Compared to individual drums, IBCs cut handling effort significantly and stack efficiently inside standard sea freight containers. In customs and freight practice, IBCs are relevant for the correct declaration of packaging type and – for hazardous goods shipments – for verification of UN certification: compliant units carry a moulded UN mark with an approval code. Food-grade and pharmaceutical IBCs are subject to additional requirements regarding cleaning validation and traceability.
