Air freight charges follow the IATA Weight Concept, which sets a straightforward billing rule: the shipper pays for whichever is greater – the actual gross weight or the volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is calculated by dividing the total shipment volume in cubic centimetres by the standard factor of 6,000, giving a chargeable figure in kilograms. This prevents lightweight but bulky cargo – such as foam packaging or flat-pack furniture – from being shipped cheaply despite occupying disproportionate hold space. Shippers should calculate both figures before booking and keep packaging as compact as possible to avoid unnecessary surcharges. The IATA Weight Concept should not be confused with chargeable weight rules in ocean freight, where a different volume-to-weight conversion applies.
