A Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) combines an internal combustion engine with one or more electric motors, with the vehicle's control system automatically switching between or blending the two power sources depending on driving conditions. Regenerative braking captures kinetic energy, stores it in an onboard battery, and feeds it back into propulsion—no external charging point is needed. Freight operators favour HEVs for urban last-mile distribution, where frequent stop-and-go cycles maximise the efficiency advantage over conventional drivetrains. Unlike plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), HEVs are entirely self-charging; unlike battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), they are not constrained by charging infrastructure availability.
