Hub-and-spoke distribution is the network model used by freight forwarders, parcel carriers, and airlines to consolidate shipments at central hubs before dispersing them to regional delivery points along the spokes. Rather than maintaining direct links between every origin and destination, freight moves first to a hub, where it is sorted and reloaded for onward transport. This sharply reduces the number of required routes and improves vehicle load factors across the network. Integrators such as FedEx and UPS built their global operations on this principle; it applies equally to rail freight and long-haul trucking. The trade-off is added routing distance and the risk that hub delays extend total transit time beyond what a direct point-to-point service would require.
