Speed, not storage, defines its purpose: cargo typically dwells for only a few hours before transfer to outbound transport. By concentrating freight flows through a single point, the model eliminates the need for direct links between every origin-destination pair, reducing both transport costs and delivery times. Hub facilities are standard infrastructure in parcel express, less-than-truckload (LTL) operations, maritime transshipment, and air cargo.
