The HS Revision 2022 updates the Harmonized System (HS) administered by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and has been in force since 1 January 2022. The HS is the globally standardized commodity classification underpinning customs declarations, trade statistics, and preferential tariff rules. This revision introduces more than 350 amendments to the six-digit commodity codes, covering new headings for electric vehicle batteries, plastic waste streams, and select agrochemicals. Freight forwarders, customs brokers, and exporters must realign their tariff databases and preferential origin calculations accordingly, as outdated HS codes can trigger duty reassessments or clearance delays. The six-digit HS code forms the common base; individual countries extend it with additional digits for national tariff purposes.
