The house air waybill (HAWB) enters the picture when a freight forwarder consolidates individual shipments from multiple shippers into a single air consignment. It constitutes the contract of carriage between the forwarder and each individual shipper, recording the cargo description, weight, dimensions, and declared value of that specific parcel. The airline itself recognises only the master air waybill (MAWB), issued by the consolidating forwarder to the carrier and covering the entire consolidated shipment. This creates a two-tier documentation structure: the HAWB governs the forwarder–shipper relationship, while the MAWB governs the forwarder–airline relationship. At destination, customs authorities and ground handlers typically require both documents for clearance and cargo release.
