Freight forwarders and port logistics operators use hinterland transport to describe the movement of goods between a seaport or terminal and inland destinations, in either direction. Cargo travels by rail, road, or inland waterway to distribution centres, production facilities, or end consignees, depending on volume, available infrastructure, and delivery deadlines. The supply chain is only complete once the goods reach the receiver—not when they clear the port gate—making hinterland transport the direct continuation of the ocean leg. For forwarders, coordinating this inland segment across multiple modes, customs checkpoints, and handover points is frequently more complex than the deep-sea passage itself. The term is distinct from pre-carriage or on-carriage, which typically refer to shorter feeder legs close to a transshipment hub.
