Goods are held on densely arranged pallet racks in narrow aisles, with automated stacker cranes or specialist forklifts handling put-away and retrieval semi- or fully automatically. High-bay warehouses are most prevalent in pharmaceuticals, food logistics, e-commerce, and industrial distribution, where high throughput combined with continuous inventory accuracy is non-negotiable. Capital expenditure on racking, conveyor systems, and warehouse management software is substantial, but the resulting storage density per square metre of floor area is a multiple of what conventional facilities can deliver. The term refers to the complete built facility – distinct from high-bay racking, which denotes the individual rack structure within it.
