A heavy weight surcharge is an additional charge levied on top of the base freight rate when a single piece exceeds a carrier-defined weight threshold. It compensates for the extra effort in handling, transhipment, and load planning, as heavy individual items often demand specialist lifting equipment or specific stowage sequences. In airfreight the threshold applies per piece; in ocean freight it is triggered by declared heavy-weight cargo. Exact limits and amounts are published in each carrier's tariff schedule. Shippers and freight forwarders should factor this cost into packaging decisions early, since splitting a heavy consignment into lighter pieces can sometimes eliminate the charge entirely. Not to be confused with an excess-weight surcharge applied to a total shipment, or with a dangerous goods surcharge.
