Purpose-built to move cargo that standard freighters simply cannot accommodate, heavy lift aircraft handle extreme weights, non-standard dimensions, and irregular shapes that would ground any conventional operation. Well-known examples include the Antonov An-124 and the Airbus Beluga XL, the latter designed specifically for intra-factory transfer of aircraft subassemblies. Typical payloads range from industrial turbines and fuselage sections to offshore platform modules and oversized defence equipment – shipments where time pressure or irreplaceability justifies exceptional cost. These aircraft feature top- or side-hinged cargo doors, reinforced decks, and on-board hydraulic loading systems allowing operations independent of specialized ground infrastructure. The Boeing 747F, while a capable freighter, does not offer the same outsize-cargo capacity and should not be conflated with true heavy lift types.
