When shipments exceed the capacity of passenger aircraft or standard freighters, heavy cargo aircraft become the only viable air freight option. These aircraft are designed primarily or exclusively for freight operations, typically with a maximum takeoff weight above 100 metric tonnes. Distinguishing features include reinforced cargo decks, oversized freight doors, flat-floor loading surfaces free of fuselage curvature, and integrated pallet and container handling systems. Well-known types include the Boeing 747F, the Airbus A330-200F, and the Antonov An-124, which specialises in outsize loads. Unlike belly freight carried in passenger aircraft holds, heavy cargo aircraft are engineered from the outset for maximum payload efficiency and fast ground turnaround – making them the preferred choice for turbines, heavy machinery components, or complete vehicles.
